Sevanavank Monastery was founded in 874 AD by princess Mariam. The remnants of the monastery that was constructed in the 9th century include only two temples – Surb Arakelots and Surb Astvatsatsin, standing among numerous khachkars. The church buildings were constructed from black tuff, which probably gave the monastery its name Sevanavank - “the Black Monastery”.
The monastery's location atop the Sevan Peninsula offers breathtaking panoramic views of the azure lake and surrounding mountains, creating a serene and captivating atmosphere for visitors. The tranquil setting and the historic significance of Sevanavank make it a popular destination for tourists, pilgrims, and locals seeking both cultural enrichment and natural beauty.
Sevanavank Monastery stands as a testament to Armenian medieval architecture and spirituality while being a cherished part of the country's cultural heritage. Its picturesque setting and historical legacy make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Armenia's rich history and natural landscapes.
