The first destination is Oshakan Church or Saint Mesrop Mashtots Cathedral built between 1875 and 1879 by Catholicos Gevork IV of Armenia. The church is famous for being the burial place of Saint Mesrop Mashtots - the creator of the Armenian alphabet. The belfry was added in 1884. During the recent years, the entrance to the church was decorated with 36 khachkars (cross-stones), depicting the 36 original letters of the Armenian alphabet created by Saint Mesrop.
Then we will head to Karmravor Church, which is one of the most charming churches of Armenia. It was built by priests Gregory and Manas in 7th century. The church is very small, but it has already managed to gain some attention. The dome is of particular interest. It's of the color red, which is the main reason why the church is called Karmravor (meaning “reddish”). It also has the name St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God). The building is made of brown tuff. There is also an asymmetric wall surrounding the church.
Our next stop is Hovhannavank - an Armenian Apostolic Church monastery located in the village of Ohanavan. It is situated atop a steep gorge carved by the Kasakh river. The monastery was dedicated to John the Baptist. Between the 12th and 17th centuries, Hovhannavank was known as an important educational and theological center of Eastern Armenia that had a scriptorium where manuscripts were written and illuminated.
The last destination Saghmosavank monastery is also situated on the edge of gorge of Qasagh River. There a number of miniatures-illustrations were created and copied. It was built in 1215. The complex of Saghmosavank Monastery includes the Church of Saint Zion, narthex, repository of manuscripts and Church of Saint Astvatsatsin. Saghmosavank Monastery was famous for its manuscripts. Elegance of the interior is highlighted by color design - its separate parts were not only made from red and black stones but also painted white, yellow and red.
